rH - Apartment Renovation for a Guzheng Musician, and Chinese Calligrapher

As a renovation project for a couple with interests in Chinese Calligraphy and Guzheng, the brief was to transform their existing apartment into a set of choreographed spaces that accommodate their activities, interests, and also, ample storage spaces for all their items they have collected over the years.

As an existing 3-bedroom apartment, it was decided to expand the study and eliminate one of the bedrooms, this allows for abundance of spaces for the practicing and teaching of Guzheng without disturbing the other areas of the apartment.

Kitchen area also has been made larger with the elimination of the Utility Platform, and also enlarging the door opening to create an open kitchen, this solved the major complaints of the original kitchen was always dark and felt isolated.

The corridor that links up between the public and private spaces has also been reconfigured with allow for storage on both sides with a display area at eye level; this transforms the rather narrow, mundane corridor into a visually striking, and widening space with ample amounts of storage.

The primary material chosen was Birch-Veneered Plywood; as it gives the versatility in strength, stability and elegance. This was not only used for the shelving units, but also, as a decorative and functional finish on selected spaces; fully exposing the beautiful materiality of the layering and lamination that is artificially natural for plywood.
